How does data move from one workflow step to the next?

A workflow is easier to maintain when each step receives only the values it needs. Explicit connections and mappings make the path from trigger input to final result visible and easier to troubleshoot.

Workflows

Treat each step as a clear handoff

Start by identifying the output each step produces and the input the next step expects. Connect the steps in the intended order, then map values deliberately instead of assuming that every prior result is passed through automatically. Use descriptive step names so the source of a value is clear when you inspect the graph later.

Keep the data shape consistent at each handoff. If a step returns several fields but the next one needs only a URL or identifier, pass that specific value. This reduces ambiguity and makes it easier to spot a missing field before it affects a later action.

Check the handoff with a representative run

Run the workflow with an input that resembles normal use and inspect the output of each connected step. Confirm that the next step receives the value you intended, including punctuation, dates, and optional fields. A successful earlier step does not prove that its output was mapped correctly into the next one.

When a later step gets an empty or unexpected value, trace the mapping back to its source. Check the source output, the selected field, and the connection before changing the downstream action. Correct one handoff at a time and rerun the relevant path; this keeps the graph understandable and limits unrelated changes.
