What does an email alias do?

An alias is an address that points to a mailbox rather than a separate place where messages are stored. It can help you present different contact addresses while keeping message handling in one mailbox.

Use aliases for address roles

You might publish one address for sales questions, another for support, and a third for billing while having each deliver to the mailbox used by the responsible person. This keeps the address visible to the sender aligned with the purpose of the conversation without requiring a separate mailbox for every role.

Decide which mailbox should receive each alias before publishing it. Keep the address spelling consistent across your website and materials, and avoid creating names that could be mistaken for a different person or department. An alias changes the destination address used for delivery; it does not create an independent inbox or its own message history.

Check the destination and reply identity

When a message arrives through an alias, confirm which mailbox receives it and how replies will appear to the recipient. The address a sender used and the address shown on a reply may differ depending on the mail client and configuration. Test the full conversation flow before you rely on the alias for customer communication.

If you remove or repoint an alias later, update any public pages and saved contacts that use it. Check for conflicts with existing addresses before adding another alias. A short address map documenting each alias, its purpose, and its destination makes administration clearer as your team adds new contact paths.
